What This Document Is
This document is the first assessment for PSYC 3700: Statistics for Psychology at Capella University. It’s a worksheet designed to begin students’ work on a larger, archival data research project using data from the General Social Survey (GSS). The assessment introduces three fictional research assistants who represent different approaches to research and learning.
Why This Document Matters
This assessment is for students enrolled in the course who are starting their final project. It’s used to guide students through the initial steps of selecting variables, downloading data, and formulating a preliminary research question. Successfully completing this assessment is a foundational step toward the final archival data research project.
Common Limitations or Challenges
This document *starts* the research process; it does not complete it. It provides a framework and initial data, but students will need to conduct further analysis and interpretation throughout the course. It also doesn’t teach statistical concepts – it assumes a baseline understanding.
What This Document Provides
The document includes:
* An overview of the archival data project and the role of the GSS.
* A table of variables to choose from (List A and List B).
* Instructions to download a pre-cleaned dataset ("GSS Data 2018" Excel file).
* A prompt to formulate a preliminary research question based on selected variables.
* An example of a completed variable selection and research question.
This preview does *not* include the full dataset, completed worksheet answers, or detailed statistical guidance.
