What This Document Is
This document is the first assignment for Pace University’s Data Mining (CS 619) course. It presents a series of questions designed to assess a student’s initial understanding of core data mining concepts and attribute classification.
Why This Document Matters
This assignment is intended for students enrolled in the CS 619 Data Mining course. It serves as a foundational exercise, testing the ability to differentiate between data mining tasks and to categorize data attributes. Successful completion demonstrates a grasp of fundamental terminology and concepts introduced early in the course.
Common Limitations or Challenges
This document provides practice questions and example answers, but it does not offer in-depth explanations of the underlying data mining principles. It’s a test of understanding, not a teaching tool. Students will still need to consult course materials and lectures for a comprehensive understanding.
What This Document Provides
The full assignment includes two main sections: the first asks students to classify activities as data mining tasks (categorizing them into Classification, Association Analysis, Clustering, Regression, or Anomaly Detection), and the second requires classifying attributes as binary, discrete, or continuous, and further as qualitative or quantitative. This preview shows examples of both question types and their corresponding answers. It does *not* include all questions from the assignment, nor does it provide detailed reasoning behind every answer.
