What This Document Is
This document is a classwork case study focused on a 32-year-old female patient, K.B., admitted with fatigue and dehydration, and with a history of diabetes and end-stage renal disease requiring hemodialysis. It presents a clinical scenario and asks a series of questions designed to assess understanding of chronic kidney disease (CKD), its management, and related nursing implications.
Why This Document Matters
This case study is intended for students in a Medical Surgical Nursing II course (NURS 223) at Bryant & Stratton College. It’s used to apply theoretical knowledge of renal failure, fluid and electrolyte imbalances, and dialysis to a practical patient situation. Successfully working through this case study will reinforce critical thinking skills necessary for providing safe and effective care to patients with CKD.
Common Limitations or Challenges
This case study provides a focused scenario. It does not cover the full spectrum of CKD presentations or all possible complications. It’s a learning tool to practice applying concepts, not a comprehensive guide to renal nursing. It requires prior knowledge of renal physiology, diabetes management, and hemodialysis principles.
What This Document Provides
The full document includes: a patient case presentation, questions assessing understanding of CKD staging, contributing factors to ESRD, interpretation of assessment findings related to dehydration, analysis of relevant lab values (potassium, BUN, creatinine, etc.), identification of potential causes of fever, detailed information regarding AV fistula assessment and management (including steel syndrome), and questions related to anemia in CKD and the use of erythropoietin. This preview does *not* include answers to the questions, detailed explanations of lab value interpretations, or a complete discussion of nursing interventions. It is a sample of the case study questions.
